Join us for a reception with artist Yolanda Sánchez on Friday, March 20th from 6 to 8 pm. This opening is a benefit for Greenscape of Jacksonville, Inc. and the public is invited to attend with a $10 donation (cash or check only) to the nonprofit at the door. All donations support Greenscape’s mission to enrich the community through the planting, protection, and promotion of trees.
______
Dr. Yolanda Sánchez was born in Havana, Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1960. She obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 1979 and spent nearly thirty years practicing and teaching psychology at the graduate level. Sánchez returned to school to formalize her art education, acquiring a BFA and subsequently an MFA in painting from Yale School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a year-long painting fellowship in Spain.
The artist lives and works in Miami Beach, Florida. Though the colors, textures, and light found in nature are an inspiration, her paintings are an expression of a felt experience rather than a direct translation of the physical world. Calligraphy, poetry, and Asian art inform her approach to composition, space, and mark-making.
Sanchez's paintings can be found in public collections such as Neiman Marcus Corporate Headquarters (Dallas, TX), Miami’s Frost Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and Caribbean, in Italy, and South Korea.
