Yolanda Sánchez | Biography

Sánchez's paintings are a search for re-enchantment, for a way to reach below the surface of things, to find that point of connection with life.  The artist wants to engage the viewer in a sensory experience, one that is un-camera-like, un-computer-like.  Her goal is to nudge the viewer into a deeper experience of the present, where the “circumference of self” is dissolved, to provide a moment of contemplation without literally telling a story.

Dr. Yolanda Sánchez was born in Havana, Cuba and emigrated to the United States in 1960.  She obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 1979 and practiced and taught psychology at the graduate level for almost 30 years. In her mid-thirties she decided to give voice to her creativity and returned to school, obtaining a BFA and MFA from Yale University in painting.  She is a Fulbright scholar who completed her fellowship as a painter in Spain. Currently Dr. Sánchez is a working artist and also serves as Director of Fine Arts & Cultural Affairs at Miami International Airport.
