Don Maynard | Biography

Don Maynard’s painting is a rich exploration of markings and gestures. He paints with encaustic; a centuries-old technique of working with molten waxes. Paintings become carefully built up surfaces - layer upon layer of texture - revealing subtle traces of symbols and graphic iconography. Various traditional and industrial materials create these highly textured surfaces.

Maynard has been awarded numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, and received the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2009. Recently he has been awarded two large-scale public art commissions in Canada. His 85 foot long cast aluminum Wave sculpture, inspired by time on the shore of Jacksonville Beach and relating to his encaustic series, will soon be built into the landscape of Toronto.
